“Has the Antichrist come?” This is a question many people are now asking themselves after observing the emergence of a self-proclaimed successor to the Imam Mahdi. Not in person, of course, but on social media. At the very least, this figure certainly has potential.

General Expectations
While Christianity awaits the return of Jesus Christ according to the Bible, Muslims, according to the Quran, are ready for the arrival of the Imam Mahdi. However, the promised Mahdi is not meant to come as a complete surprise. Numerous events and developments are to be expected beforehand. No fewer than 50 criteria are described. (Source).
A sinister, dazzling figure
Social media is currently buzzing with buzz surrounding an ominous figure who calls himself the arrived Imam Mahdi. He’s by no means the first in recent decades, but his appearance has a special quality. This simple claim to be the Mahdi was apparently not enough for the proclaimer, who appeared on screens rather suddenly. He clearly sees himself destined for greater things. In addition to interviews, he also gave speeches from his lectern to a crowd of (apparent?) believers. Following are two excerpts from his messages:
He demands obedience
“Now, oh Christians, in the east and the west, hear me and obey. I am a messenger sent to you from Jesus Christ (Alayhi Salam). Paul is false and lead you astray. The church is corrupt and no longer upholds the law of God nor does it defend the oppressed. The papacy has been stolen and the rightful heir has been pushed aside. There is no one else but me that you are obliged to obey. May God be a witness that I have proclaimed.“
“Boldness wins,” as the saying goes. At least he doesn’t beat around the bush.
He is a multi-successor

“I am Abdullah, the successor of Imam Al-Mahdi (AS), the successor of the comforter Ahmed, the successor of Simon Peter, the successor of Muhammad, the successor of Jesus Christ. I am the true and legitimate Pope. I am the proof upon the Christians. I am the son of the Muslims through my father and the son of the Christians and the Jews through my mother. I am the son of the east, through my father, and the son of the west, through my mother.
I am like Zulkarnain, who with one horn in the east and one in the west. And I am the inheritor of all that lies between. I am more knowledgeable than any false Pope. And I am appointed by name in the will of the prophets. My name is also on the tongue of Isaiah, who prophesied of the righteous servant, and he said, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.“
In his “humble modesty,” this successor to “Everyman of rank and name” expressed “I am” no less than 9 times in this section of his speech.
It seems very artificial

His rather sinister appearances are striking. He himself wears a cap pulled down just above his eyes, dressed in black from head to toe, and the lighting around his apparitions remains very dim. A certain number of his visible or presented followers also wear similar clothing. A shining light would look different. The texts he recites appear rehearsed and delivered without emotion.
In the interviews shown, he demonstrates knowledge of the biblical and Islamic background, but everything seems very artificial. Even the moderators’ questions and reactions seem very unnatural and contrived. The crowd gathered around him seems more like extras than genuinely interested people.
Deception within Deception
As bizarre as this Mahdi and his appearances may be, the effect was not lost on him. Discussions surrounding this figure are heated. As can be seen from the corresponding social media comments, this is likely with the desired effect. Hardly anyone wants to believe this dark, dazzling figure’s self-ascribed role, but he is highly regarded as the “expected Antichrist” and deceiver..
Within Christian-oriented circles, the “successor” isn’t taken particularly seriously for what he claims to be. The catch, however, is that the discussions surrounding this figure fuel the image of a future Antichrist, and this image is also able to cement it in people’s minds. A deception within a deception, so to speak.
Suitable for distraction
People’s attention should be directed, as usual, wherever it may be, as long as it is away from Rome and the papacy based there (Info). This strategy of shifting the focus away from the easily identifiable “Antichrist,” who is referred to in the Gospels as, among other things, “man of sin, son of perdition, mother of harlots, Babylon the Great,” was already pursued shortly after the beginning of the Reformation in the 16th century.
The reformers, initially almost all former Catholics, were helped by the now freely available Bible. The study of the Bible, let alone its interpretation, remains the responsibility of the Roman Catholic Church’s Magisterium (CCC 85). Thus, even priests generally had little idea of what the Bible actually says. They were always “specialists” in liturgy, but hardly instructed in the written word.
Since not only the first reformers, but a whole line of them, clearly recognized the papacy as the earthly adversary of God (Info), the Roman Church’s top priority was to conceal this insight as quickly as possible. Entirely new stories were quickly invented for the Bible’s prophecies, and these have persisted to this day (Info).
Consolidation of the vision of a single Antichrist

Such a “pseudo-Mahdi,” who is obviously not taken particularly seriously by the Muslim world, but all the more so by the Christian communities, can therefore certainly fulfill the intended purpose of confirming the already entrenched false belief in an Antichrist and the establishment of an earthly kingdom of peace through the subsequent coming of Christ. (Info). However, only in the minds of those who are already misguided.
Jesus Christ warned of the deception of the end times. He also warned against those who claim to be Christ. This Mahdi fit this pattern perfectly. Identified as a deceiver, but (unfortunately) also as the falsely believed Antichrist. It may be that this figure remains only a flash in the pan, but its impact on many people is certainly lasting.
Anyone who wants to keep an eye on the activities and actions of God’s long-standing adversary should, however, turn their attention to Rome.
And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
