Armor of God – A Spiritual Defensive Equipment

Ritterrüstung

Deutsch

The term “armor of God” is relatively well known. But it is also important to know this equipment in detail and especially the purely spiritual aspect behind it. This armor is essential in order to be able to survive the coming times with only a few injuries in the worst case scenario.

Armor is not offensive equipment

The armor of God. A term that is misunderstood by many believers as equipment with a weapon and shield in order to defend “the faith” with violence and, moreover, to have to teach this faith to the “heathens” with the force of arms. The Roman Catholic Church, with its historically unprecedented violent campaigns, uses the excuse that it never spread Catholicism with violence, but that it wanted to defend its unity from “dangers from outside”. “Kill them all, God knows his own,” was the call of Pope Innocent III for the campaign against the Albigensians and other victims (Info). It remains to be seen what criteria Charlemagne, so revered today, acted according to and was crowned emperor by the Pope in 800 because of his campaigns.

The armor of God is actually a spiritual defensive equipment. The most well-known Bible passage is found in Ephesians 6:10-20. In this passage, Paul describes in his letter a complete set of equipment for the “spiritual warrior” in order to be armed against the attacks of the adversary and his earthly helpers.

The spiritual armor consists of:

  • Belt of truth
  • Breastplate of righteousness
  • Boots of readiness (for testimony and peace)
  • Shield of faith
  • Helmet of salvation
  • Sword of the Spirit (Word of God)

The only apparent offensive weapon consists of fiery arrows to “extinguish evil”.

Paul clearly emphasizes that this is not a battle fought with weapons against flesh and blood, but a spiritual battle against the powers, the world rulers of darkness and against the spiritual forces of evil.

The description of the armor of God thus includes the representation of the truth, righteousness, the effort to proclaim the gospel and peace, holding fast to the true faith, the search for salvation and redemption and the countering with the word of God.

Practical examples of the armor of God

The Bible also shows what this armor could look like in practice using examples. These are just a few extracts:
Belt of truth: John 17:17; 2 Corinthians 10:5; Proverbs 12:22
Breastplate of righteousness: Proverbs 11:3; 1 John 1:9; Philippians 4:8
Boots of readiness: Matthew 5:9; Romans 10:15; Philippians 4:6-7
Shield of faith: Isaiah 41:13; Hebrews 11:1; Psalm 13:6
Helmet of salvation: 2 Timothy 1:7; 2 Corinthians 10:5; Romans 12:2
Sword of the Spirit: Matthew 4:4; Psalm 119:11; 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Be sure to consider the spiritual aspect

Ritterrüstung
armor for defense

It is the spiritual aspect that runs through the entire gospel. Recognizing this is an absolute prerequisite for understanding the complicated, mystical-seeming book of Revelation. The fact that this purely spiritual aspect is hardly taken into account is evident from the many circulating interpretations of the past and upcoming events described in the book of Revelation. This leads to the statements being understood literally, such as smoke rising from a deep throat with “flying scorpions”, a gathering of all(!) armed forces for the final battle in Armageddon, burnt trees and grass, etc.

These people could easily be misled by sudden celestial phenomena, forests burning and rivers turning red, in order to simulate the course of prophecies. What is not recognized, however, is that of the “7 trumpets” in Revelation, which describe a purely spiritual aspect, 6 trumpets can already be heard (Revelation 9 and 11). In fact, “only” the 7th trumpet was missing. The symbols used in Revelation are explained throughout, mainly based on the Old Testament. (Info).

Necessary already today

The armor of God not only helps to recognize the course of events and to correctly assess what is imminent, but also to be able to cope with this time. The horror and the subsequent apostasy will be enormous if the propagated but false (not spiritual) view does not come to pass. People without this armor of God can easily be drawn in the direction of complete deception. There is a risk of accepting the “mark of the beast” without even noticing it (Info).

Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.
Revelation 1:3
