A gigantic abuse scandal in the Church of England that is only mentioned in the media because it cannot be covered up as non-existent. The Archbishop of Canterbury showed “leadership” and has now resigned.
Earthquake in Church of England
The series of revelations of serious abuse of those under protection within the church continues unabated. A gigantic abuse scandal was recently uncovered in the Church of England. Gigantic in relation to the scope and also in relation to the internal knowledge and the measures that were not taken. Once again, efforts were made to hush up and hush up this “matter”. The report revealed that the Church of England, who ran a shelter for adolescent boys, did nothing to stop the perpetrator’s massive abuse. The perpetrator was transferred to South Africa and there the perpetrator started a similar hostel with the same ambitions.
The scope of the (known) cases of abuse by the lay preacher and lawyer includes over 100 male adolescents in the 1970s and 1980s. The perpetrator is also the founder of the Zambesi Ministries in Zimbabwe. There was also frequent abuse of children there.
It took “some” time
It “only” took around six years for the scandal to reach the head of the Church of England, at least at an official level. The abuser died in 2018. The consequence: The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has now resigned from his post. The pressure simply became too great because it emerged that the church leadership was aware of the massive abuse, but nothing further was done (Source).
Hypocrisy in our own ranks
Welby regretted the incident and said he had a “deep sense of shame at the historic failings of the Church of England”. Furthermore, in this church people tend to pat each other on the back rather than express serious regret. The Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, told the BBC that he admired Welby’s decision. This demonstrates the leadership and responsibility for the church’s failures.
In short: you could also call it rampant hypocrisy.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.
Matthew 23:27
